I grew up living near the Toa Payoh night market, but did not know it well. Through this project, I was trying to explore and confront this unfamiliar space that is nonetheless part of my growing up years, as well as document a trade that, as it fades, reminds us of the inevitable passing of time and the changing circumstances of our lives.
Into The Dark is a documentation of a disappearing trade: a makeshift, open-air vegetable night market in Toa Payoh. Such markets have been around for more than 30 years, serving customers who come from restaurants, "wet markets" and hawker centres. But only three such markets are left today.
